Possession is key as control is gained

Ralph Hasenhuttl has spoken before about how his side need to take care of the ball when they are trying to take back control or see a result out.

After a poor first-half, Saints did exactly this in the second-half and it eventually led to their second goal.

According to the StatsZone app, they completed 81 passes in the middle third of the pitch (Brighton made 44) and attempted 97 between the 46th minute and the 82nd – just after Danny Ings had scored his penalty.

Key to much of this possession retention were Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse and Jannik Vestergaard who made the most, 2nd most and 4th most passes of any player throughout the 90 minutes.

Vestergaard also produced a superb switch that saw Kyle Walker-Peters put into the box to win the penalty.
