In 11 of 12 previous Prem seasons, teams in those positions at this time have finished in the top six.
In 7 of those seasons, they’ve qualified for the Champions League

Position in the table bodes well
Okay Saints fans, let’s get carried away.
Our team is in a superb position at the time of writing and sit fourth in the Premier League table after playing 12 matches. Had Leicester not won yesterday, Saints would still be third too.
Looking back over the 12 previous Premier League seasons beginning in 2008/09, the teams that were third or fourth in the table with 12 matches played went on to finish in the top-six in 11 of those years.
Seven of those campaigns also saw those teams qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top four.
It may still be fanciful to suggest that Saints will be brushing shoulders with Europe’s elite come next season, but their relentless showings give a strong indication that European nights of some sort at St Mary’s may not be far away.
