The Danish international goes from strength to strength, a Rolls Royce in red and white striped livery. Vestergaard is fast becoming one of the most consistent performers in top flight football, capable of doing the messy in elegant, unfussy fashion.

He was superb against Sheffield United, winning eleven duels and making four clearances (source: squawka football). Perhaps most impressively though, was his finesse on the ball, as the great Dane cut The Blades to shreds with his incisive passing and inch perfect diagonals.

Vestergaard is forming a solid relationship with Jan Bednarek at the heart of the Southampton defence and such were their efforts today, Alex McCarthy had very little to do in the Southampton goal. There has been a dramatic improvement in his all round play since Hasenhuttl’s arrival at the club and long gone are the days where his touch or pace bore a calamitous air to it.
