Superb defensive resilience secures the win

As the Liverpool onslaught started in the second-half, so did the inevitable thoughts of a quick equaliser for Jurgen Klopp’s side from fans watching.

Saints certainly had to hang on for their win but tireless defending – much like was seen as they beat Manchester City 1-0 last season – earned them a priceless three points.

Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek were heroic. Stephens’ block to deny Sadio Mane a free shot on goal was a match-winning moment in itself, with both centre-backs making seven blocks, 14 clearances and nine interceptions between them.

Kyle Walker-Peters and Ryan Bertrand did excellently against flying wingers, James Ward-Prowse and Ibrahima Diallo were calm and composed in midfield and the late energy provided by Nathan Tella, Dan N’Lundulu and Yan Valery was crucial.

Despite Fraser Forster playing his first 90 minutes for around nine months, another shutout was secured and took Saints to eight league clean sheets for 2020/21.
