Southampton have been linked with midfielder Volante Wellington who can move for free because his contract is up at Athletic-PR.

The Brazilian is now 29-years-old and has caught the eye of Southampton and can join the club for free as he is currently not on a contract.

He has caught the attention of multiple clubs so the Saints will not be the only one courting the player.

Wellington plays defensive midfield and could provide some depth to the squad and coverage for any injuries. At 29-years-of-age he will have the experience needed to fill in when needed and should not take terribly long to adjust.

I do not think this would be the worst move for the club. Obviously, he would not walk into the starting XI but he could be used as a defensive sub to shore up the defense or come in when there are injuries or cup matches.

The Saints have yet to make any moves this January so you have to think it will be happening soon or the window will shut before they know it.

Ralph has stated he needs more depth as the team lacks depth in a number of positions. Hopefully, they are able to splash some cash or make moves like this that are free to get Ralph the players he needs.

I think the Saints will make their first move next week and let us hope it is a smart move.
