Maximum effort given but limited by other factors

No one can say that Saints did not give their all on Saturday night but the application could only reap so many rewards during the game. With a first-choice team out, there would have been much more chance of grabbing a result.

All Premier League teams have had their injury issues this season but it looks like Saints’ turn has come now and during a spell of fixtures that are crucial. According to premierinjuries.com, only Brighton (9) had more unavailable players for this round of fixtures than Saints (8).

A few faces may return over the next week – Danny Ings and Oriol Romeu in particular will be welcome additions back into the dressing room. However, Will Smallbone looked to picked up a knee problem versus Leicester and will be added to the list of players in the treatment room.

It may well be early to mid-February by the time that Saints are full strength once again and they can only compete so much in the meantime.
