Strikers and Substitutes

Nathan Redmond, Striker – 4

A surprise start alongside Ings, with a big role to fill in Che Adams’ work rate.  Stood watching as a Bertrand cross flashed across the back post.  No connection with Ings early on and looked a passenger for 25 minutes.  Was provided quite a bit of space to shoot and seemed to continually hit defenders.  The team screamed for a big performance, he should have scored, he needed to create more and his rating is fully deserved.

Danny Ings, Striker – 6

Naughty little flick around a Villa defender to setup Armstrong which should have been the first Saints’ goal.  Was sniffing out the near post routinely in the opening half hour with no real luck.  Was a total ghost until he cut a reverse pass to Adams which he should have buried.  First touch on Che Adams’ cross field pass was devastatingly poor.  Killed so many opportunities today as he presses for a chance.  VAR was way too quick to take his goal away, but this contract situation is 100% disrupting his mindset and until he makes a decision he will play indecisively.

Moussa Djenepo, Substitute Attacking-Midfielder – 6

Started on the wing, but after Walcott’s injury, moved to right-back.  Could not play freely with the responsibilities of right-back.  Given a couple chances to create on the wing and avoided make the big mistake on Grealish we all expected.

Che Adams, Substitute Striker – 7

A bit of a surprise he didn’t start, but he probably needed some rest.  Was on his way in, but Theo Walcott’s injury expedited that move.  Should have scored from 8 yards out, but pinged the ball right at Martinez.  Danced the sideline and delivered one of the best passes you will ever see to Ings, just for his strike partner to flub it.  Will undoubtedly start Tuesday and let’s hope he is fresh.

Alexandre Jankewitz, Centre-Midfielder – N/A

Came on when no CM were left standing as Romeu left the pitch.  Battled at times, but didn’t cover his angles on the sidelines.  Interesting to see him play after asking to depart, but it looked like it was out of necessity more than anything else.  Could be starting alongside JWP on Tuesday.
