Midfielders

James Ward-Prowse, Centre-Midfielder – 7

His connection in quick passing with Romeu far exceeds his ability with Diallo.  What more can we say of his free kicks?  Seriously JWP = GOAT.  Put his corners in good positions, but failed to create from free play against 9 men while acting as the point of attack.  Was the only one making cutting runs from deep as balls were crossed into the box.

Oriol Romeu, Centre-Midfielder – 6

Megged twice in the early going, but of course undeterred in his pressing.  Was a little slow in possession, but the pitch was no help.  Looked lost for a role with Newcastle down to 10 men, and a little surprising he continued to play.

Nathan Redmond, Attacking-Midfielder – 5

Showed a little fight in him from the start which helped build his confidence.  Missed Minamino and Ings by a step on two incisions which would have led to goals.  His inability to dribble by players was due to the pitch, but his crossing in the final 20 minutes was futile as he never beat the first man.

Takumi Minamino, Attacking-Midfielder – 6

Few touches in the opening 20 minutes, but he did attempt one shot cutting in on his right side.  What a first touch and strike to end Southampton’s nightmare and make his mark on the manager.  The goal was great, but he couldn’t figure out his role when tactics changed and really offered little to the team after the hour.
