Southampton vs. Wolves: Premier League – Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders
Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 7
Ran out a very senior side at 12PM after a Thursday match. Yes, the team needs to right the Premier League ship, but the health of the players should be priority #1. KWP is the latest casualty, another hamstring apparently, and that has to be on the Hasenhuttl hustle. He tried to change the match early and the KWP injury derailed his tactics. We also have legitimate questions as to why the second half started so slowly. 6 straight league defeats and another Southampton record cannot be covered up by a FA Cup quarterfinal appearance. All that said, he is still the only way forward at this point in time.
Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 6
Could have slept walk through the first half. Chose the wrong way on the penalty. Beaten by pace from an impossible angle from Neto. Time for Forster. When things are going wrong for keepers, they tend to keep going that way, and it is tough to drop him for having so little to do with the team’s performance today, but results matter and Forster is bringing them.
Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 7
Flashed his senior skill set in cutting Adama Traore out of the first half. Unlucky to have Semedo’s strike directly at his arm for the penalty. Honestly, what is he supposed to do? Disgusted with the result and we can at least takeaway this as his commitment to our success.
Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 7
His movement suggested he was far more physically prepared than his return against Newcastle. One first half diaganol of note picked out KWP on the back end of the box. Defended pretty well in his few 1v1 opportunities, except for Neto turning him around badly to decide the match.
Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 6
Some unathletic clearances stood out in the opening half hour. Took his yellow card on the left side of the pitch for some strange reason? Made up for it by not scoring an own goal. His passing was questionable today with everything under-hit, suggesting his confidence is not quite back up to speed.
Kyle Walker-Peters, Right-Back – 7
Early 1v1 defending was a huge plus. Got forward sparingly, typically within the more methodical buildups. Battled his way through 70 minutes, but yet another casualty of the Hasenhuttl system and schedule.
