Southampton vs. Wolves: Premier League – Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Strikers and Substitutes
Danny Ings, Striker – 6
Played the first 15 minutes a step off. The volley, woah, that changed the team’s outlook, but the star striker disappeared for the second period. Cannot pick out a moment of note, which is not all his fault, but a major issue for Southampton.
Nathan Redmond, Striker – 7
Preferred over Che Adams and his quick movement paid off early on. However, he killed the first chance in the box with a poor touch and was offside ahead of slipping in Minamino on a second. Didn’t help himself with two more poor passes with his teammates in good position. Terrible pass behind Ings on a 2v1 break, but nearly finished perfectly at the far post on the same run. The 43rd minute was his highlight of what he can bring to the team, a turn at midfield, and a drive forward 20 yards around multiple defenders. KWP fed him on a vintage push in the second half, a cutback to Armstrong was unfortunately blocked. It was the most up and down match for any player in recent memory, but he was the one spurring the team forward for an equaliser. He put the ball on Adams’ head for what would have been an amazing goal and floated inside to help cut through the lines. There were moments of excellence mixed in with opportunities missed and the sheer amount of words in his recap means he left an impression today.
Moussa Djenepo, Substitute Attacking-Midfielder – 6
Entered at the hour mark for Minamino who wasn’t quite in the match. Forced to move to a right wing-back as the team switched to a back 3. Hilarious foul throw and immediately removed from that role. Found Redmond down the right channel on the Che Adams’ diving header attempt. It’s not fair to judge him when he was taken out of his comfort zone again. Many will jump to criticize, but he was solid in the Cup while starting in his true position.
Che Adams, Substitute Striker – 6
Acted as fresh legs with the team behind, replacing Armstrong who had run his course. Made some good runs behind the Wolves defence and threw himself at a header spectacularly. We could say an inform striker would have put home the rebound, but it was offside and he was the first Saint to pounce.
Mohammed Salisu, Substitute Centre-Back – N/A
Entered as KWP exited and Southampton went to a back 3. Very first touch was not up to pace, but is an athletic and physical specimen and showed it on a few occasions.
