Jack Stephens

As a natural defender, Stephens may be the most natural stand-in for Walker-Peters.

However, his display against Newcastle when he filled in as a right-back will have been a cause for concern. His positioning was not great during this game and played a part in at least one Newcastle goal in the Magpies’ 3-1 win.

Saints’ full-backs normally bomb forward and provide a key attacking outlet but perhaps a more reserved approach will be needed to ensure no gaps are created for the opposition to take advantage of.

With Jannik Vestergaard, Mohammed Salisu and Jan Bednarek as other alternatives at centre-back at the moment, Stephens looks set to be the man to take the open position.
