Defensive lapses from Southampton on Wednesday evening turned a bright performance into a heavy-looking defeat to Manchester City.
Saints enjoyed much of the ball in the early stages and lined up in their usual 4-2-2-2 system rather than a defensive 5-4-1 as was expected when team news was released.
Even when James Ward-Prowse equalised from the penalty spot, it looked like the visitors could take something from the Etihad Stadium.
However, poor decision-making and a lack of determination in defensive challenges saw City given a comfortable win in the end.
Whilst there are positives to take, Saints must learn from the mistakes they made and aspire to reach levels of efficiency all over the pitch that will help them become a much better team.
