Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 5

Could have made his subs much earlier here just to change something, even if it did not change the result. Big selection headaches now ahead of the FA Cup Semi-Final next weekend.

Fraser Forster, Goalkeeper – 5

Made three saves and was not to blame for much of what went on. Gave away the penalty but he was exposed by gaps that opened up in midfield and defence.

Will surely keep his place for next weekend after showing positive form for much of his run back in the side.

Kyle Walker-Peters, Right-Back – 6

One of the limited attacking outlets for Saints on the day. Did break into some good positions during the match but was often crowded out by determined defending.

Good to see him back to looking lively after a rusty showing against Burnley last time out.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 4

Part of a backline that was pulled all over the place by West Brom in the early stages, and then left space in the defence for Callum Robinson to power through and score the third.

With Mohammed Salisu and Jack Stephens waiting in the wings, there is pressure in these positions.

Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 4

Looked slow and lagged behind West Brom attackers as they broke through time and time again. Not all the defence’s fault by any means, but a poor team display saw the defenders hopelessly exposed at times.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 5

Willing running but no space or time on the ball to work with as Saints were squeezed out by an opposition with a comfortable lead. Assured of his place next week with no other senior left-backs at the club right now.
