A much-needed rest

It is well-documented how Ward-Prowse has played every minute of the last two Premier League seasons for Saints but his run of football even goes past that mark.

Since his first start under Ralph Hasenhuttl back in December 2018, he has played a part in the last 109 Saints games in all competitions and has missed just 117 minutes of football.

Add in his England appearances and he has covered a lot of ground on a football pitch.

It seemed for a while as if he would be getting no break this summer with participation in the Euros but it now appears that he will be getting time off before Saints’ own pre-season kicks into action.

Saints and their fans will be hoping that their captain’s experience with England will make him even more determined to perform to his highest standards again next season and to drive his team to a better Premier League finish.

If he does manage to maintain a level of consistency into a third season, he may well push himself further into the England reckoning with the 2020 World Cup in sight.
