Everton vs Southampton: Premier League – Key Moments from the game
By Joe Mcindoe
A McCarthy howler seals the deal
The question of who should start between the sticks has far from been a settled one of late. Ralph Hasenhuttl split last season between the shot stoppers, and the fan base has been equally divided.
Alex McCarthy received the start over Fraser Forster, but his performance will do little to cement his place in the side.
With the final whistle fast approaching, Richarlison found his way onto the assist charts as well as the score sheet. The attacker produces a smart cross into the danger zone. Calvert-Lewin is fastest to react as he dives down to meet the ball.
Comically, it hits McCarthy before rolling past the despairing keeper. It was at close range, but should have been met with stronger resistance.
Put simply, it was nothing short of a howler. Let’s hope that things improve from here. Otherwise it’s going to be a very long season.
