Strikers and Substitutes

Che Adams, Striker – 8

Played exclusively with his back to goal to start, winning a couple fouls, but not being able to maintain possession in crowded areas.  Took a chance with his left-foot and was rewarded with his deflected shot finding the back of the net.  Went down with a calf injury which was likely a feint to take a sting out of United momentum.  Perfect pass to Adam Armstrong after a turnover in possession.  Massive tackle on Bruno late and killed some time again during extra time.

Adam Armstrong, Striker – 7

First 20 minutes he had difficulty getting a foot in, making a mess of a couple opportunities to counter.  A curling effort from a difficult first touch before the half hour mark was a poignant reminder of his threat.    Beautiful flick to open up space for Che Adams’ goal.  Missed a golden opportunity to send St. Mary’s rocking in the 74th minute.  Constantly running in the right channels while finding tight spaces and will convert his chances as more come.

Jan Bednarek, Substitute Centre-Back – 6

Replaced Theo Walcott and went to the centre of a back three at the half.  Not many impact moments of note, but helped secure the point.

Ibrahima Diallo, Substitute Attacking-Midfielder – 5

Took over on the left-side for Djenepo and was a deer in headlights in his early possession.  Doesn’t look like an attacking-midfielder at all, but that wasn’t needed here, and his fresh legs certainly made a difference.

Kyle Walker-Peters, Substitute Left-Back – N/A

Has to be struggling watching Livramento’s success, but this sub shows his versatility and the depth of the Saints’ squad.  Was really important in the last 10 minutes keeping possession while the legs of most his teammates were gone.
