Saints had sold most of their 2013/14 team and had rebuilt with a team of players that would go on to finish 7th the following season. Alderweireld arrived to take Dejan Lovren’s place after signing on loan from Atletico Madrid.

A commanding presence at the back who also had a good eye for a pass, the Belgium international was a natural partner for then Saints captain Jose Fonte.

He played 28 times for Saints and made a real impression in his time at St Mary’s but the club were denied the chance to sign him permanently once Spurs registered their interest to Atletico.
