Southampton: Takeaways from Saint’s loss to Wolves
It was a disappointing Saturday for Southampton against Wolverhampton and the club has some questions that really need to be answered.
Southampton saw themselves go down 1-0 on a long ball over the top and could not provide a response with the remaining time. Now they have to go to London to take on Chelsea and will need to figure a few things out if they hope to get a result from that match.
Let us take a look at some takeaways from this match.
What is going on with the attack?
Southampton have currently only scored 4 goals this season in the Premier League. One from their strikers, one own goal, and one penalty make up for 3 of those.
Something needs to change and I believe that it starts with a change to the starting lineup. I believe Armando Broja deserves a chance to start as well as Nathan Tella. Additionally, I think the players are looking for the perfect shot and the hesitancy in the box leads to shots being blocked or them being dispossed. I think they need to start firing shots on target as soon as they get a chance and believe in their finishing ability.
Clearly what we have been trying is not working and it is time to reassess.
Defense is for real
Even though Southampton did not come away with a result the defense has shown that it is legit and will help the team stay afloat while they figure out this attack. Mohammed Salisu has been incredible this season and I have had a lot of fun watching him play.
The goal that was allowed simply cannot happen but conceding only a goal is not the end of the world. The club have only conceded 7 so far this season in the league and that includes matches against Manchester City and United.
It has been a frustrating start to the season to say the least but the one bright spot has been the defense. I believe they will figure it out and be just fine this season but we have to get through this rough patch.
