Midfielders

Oriol Romeu, Centre-Midfielder – 6

Endless qualities and superlatives, but he can’t spray the ball around the pitch and it slows Southampton down.  9 out of 10 times it is a low risk pass, but once in a while he needs to take a chance.  Excellent in recovery as always and a blocked shot running backwards in. the final 15 was astonishing.  Still, it has to be seen that JWP/Diallo is the partnership of the future, and the very near future.

Ibrahima Diallo, Centre-Midfielder – 7

Opened up both his outside backs with vision midway through the first half.  Sprung Broja with a first time pass leading to the second Saints’ strike.  Clean in possession, but maybe could make a bigger mark defensively.  Although, it is hard to say playing against 2 sides in which Saints’ controlled the ball.

Theo Walcott, Attacking-Midfielder – 5

Two opportunities in the opening 15 minutes, the first he was offside, the second, he saw a lot of the goal and failed to beat his defender on a strike.  Tactically astute in his movement, but not beating the first man off the dribble or cross.

Mohammed Elyounoussi, Attacking-Midfielder – 6

Killed an excellent break in the opening minute.  Did really well to keep possession throughout the contest, but he can slow the match down twisting and turning as he does.  Nearly put a looping header into the far post, but otherwise didn’t threaten goal or create big opportunities with his passing.  Wasn’t the creative force he has been recently, but didn’t do much wrong.
