Reported Southampton transfer target Fabio Carvalho has turned down a new contract at his current club Fulham.

This is according to a report from the Athletic, who confirm that the young winger is set on a move elsewhere having attracted the attention of several Premier League clubs in recent times.

Southampton’s interest in Carvalho was revealed by an exclusive from TEAMtalk back in October and it could be that the 19-year-old looks to secure the move he desires this coming January.

It is unknown how much money Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will have to spend in the new year and any potential signings will be dependent on where his team find themselves in the Premier League table.

Carvalho would add another top talent to Southampton’s future plans

There will surely be some huge competition for Carvalho’s signature if he is touted for a move by his representatives in January. The England youth international put in some bright displays in the top-flight at the back of last season despite Fulham already being down and he clearly has some significant skill to be developed into the future.

Football fans around the country would have been expecting him to dominate the Championship this season but injury issues have halted his progress somewhat.

He has managed just seven appearances in all competitions and missed 11 matches after picking up a toe injury and having a short spell out with Coronavirus.

Carvalho has been back in the Fulham squad recently but it appears that other players are ahead of him now. It could be that the ongoing contract situation is meaning that other players are prioritised too.

There is no doubt that signing Carvalho would be a coup for Southampton but they will need to make sure that he will be committed to them for good period of time to enable development of his game and then a potential sell on for profit in the future.
