Manager, Goalkeeper, and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 6

Very positive team in a 4-2-2-2, question is, would he have changed keeper if Forster was fit?  Brighton made 3 changes, Ralph made none, leaving it until the 80th minute to bring on Armstrong.  Lost his keeper to injury and two central players to suspension.  Had a 5 minute plus break to injury to organize his side and they failed.  Ralph was disgusted after the performance and much of the blame must be on the players, but the substitutions are baffling.  The McCarthy saga is not going to go away and neither is his team’s record from winning positions.

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 7

Parried his first and second saves to the left, something he failed to do midweek.  Big save, but simple save in the 77th.  Injured himself at some point during this match and now all Saints fans will get their wish and have him dropped for Harry Lewis.  Be careful what you wish for!  Going to take some more slack after Ralph threw him under the bus for not removing himself from the match.

Kyle Walker-Peters, Left-Back – 7

Breaks into the attacking third routinely, but no big chances result from his play.  Twice in the first half, a left-footed player (name Perraud) would have delivered a dangerous ball into the box.  Tariq Lamptey did not exist in this match and KWP deserves that credit.  Limited his mistakes today compared to midweek and put in a shift.

Mohammed Salisu, Centre-Back – 7

Rock solid first half outside of his long throws.  Brutal way to get suspended for the match against Arsenal.  Fell to the ground after the final whistle and you wonder when he is going to lose patience with the club.

Lyanco, Centre-Back –  7

Cut out early Brighton attempts to get behind, no more important than in the 10th minute.  A good attempt on the swivel followed shortly from a Saints’ corner.  Aggressive winning the ball in midfield and clipped a pass to Che for a strike.  If you ask most fans, he probably outplayed Bednarek on a good day and is the least of our worries at this point.  Big shoes to fill v. Arsenal next weekend.

Tino Livramento, Right-Back – 6

Surprisingly two chances to score in the first 15.  A weak left-footed shot and a cushioned volley well off target both could have given Saints the lead.  Found Broja beautifully for a should-have-been 2nd goal.  Reserved in running forward for most of the match and it seems like it has been a few contests since we have seen a long run with the ball.  Missed two crosses that maybe his fresh legs would have made.  Needs a rest, and everyone, but Hasenhuttl sees it.
