Southampton boss Ruben Selles reveals managerial ‘dream’ after landing first permanent job
Southampton boss Ruben Selles has revealed that he dreams of leading Valencia to Champions League glory after landing his first permanent managerial job.
Selles staked his claim to be the Saints’ replacement for Nathan Jones last weekend. He notably led the team to a brilliant 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League as the caretaker manager.
It emerged earlier on Friday (24th February) that Southampton have decided to give the job to the Spaniard. The club have since confirmed his appointment as their manager until the end of the season.
Selles, who has previously worked with the likes of Copenhagen and Villarreal in different positions, has thus bagged his first senior managerial job.
Speaking at his first press conference after being named the Saints boss, Selles revealed that he would love to lead his local club Valencia to Champions League glory. He also expressed his desire to win the FIFA World Cup with Spain.
"“I have my own dreams. My intention when I was a kid was to play for Valencia”, Selles said.“Of course, I didn’t get the quality or chances to play because that was my team.”“Then, the next one is to arrive with them in the Champions League and win the Champions League, and get the World Cup for Spain.”“That’s my dream and to do that, you need to be a really good coach, so I’m still trying to arrive there.”"
Southampton boss Selles relishing challenge
Asked if he feels he now has an opportunity to prove his abilities as a first-team manager, Selles replied:
"“Well, I have the job full-time, it’s not an opportunity. This is just what it is.”“It’s the Premier League, it’s a challenge and it’s a way to lead a great organisation into a good moment, that’s how I’m going to take it.”“I’m already there. I do not have to prove anything. I just think we have a very, very [good] group inside to work [with].”“It’s my pleasure to lead, so there’s nothing more to say about that.”"
Selles will be determined to lead Southampton to a win against Leeds United on Saturday, 25th February, in his first match in charge of the team permanently.
