Southampton sent brilliant Ruben Selles message by Oriol Romeu
Former Southampton star Oriol Romeu has claimed that Ruben Selles is the right man to take the Saints forward this season.
Southampton are currently without a permanent manager after sacking Nathan Jones earlier this month. First-team coach Selles has been in charge of the team on an interim basis.
However, the Spaniard has staked his claim to be the club’s next permanent manager in recent days. He notably led the team to a brilliant 1-0 win against Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend.
Selles is now increasingly likely to be tasked with leading the team at least until the end of the season. The Saints have decided that he has done enough to get the job, as per Fabrizio Romano.
Romeu has now provided his verdict on his countryman taking charge of the team for the rest of the season. The midfielder explained that Selles is trustworthy and has the players’ backing.
"“From the conversations I had with him [Selles], he seems to be someone very trustworthy”, Romeu told The Athletic.“Players really like him and he’s got great football knowledge.”"
The former Southampton midfielder is confident that Selles is the ‘right fit’ for the club now. He is convinced that the 39-year-old is capable of steering the team clear of the relegation zone.
"“From what I could see against Chelsea, there was already a change in environment and mentality from the players. He is the right fit right now”, the now Girona man said.“Ruben has always been very close to the squad since he joined: having lots of chats, always trying to cheer people up and being proactive.”"
Southampton face Leeds United next
Having led Southampton to a win against Chelsea, Selles will be determined to repeat the trick this weekend. The Saints are set to face fellow relegation-battlers Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday, February 25.
A win against the Whites would see the Hampshire-based club potentially move out of the drop zone. It remains to be seen if the club will confirm their stance over Selles before the trip to Yorkshire.
