Southampton come into Saturday’s clash against Crystal Palace at St. Mary’s remaining bottom of the Premier League table. With only eight matches left to play, the Saints need to start stringing results together if they hope to stay in the Premier League this season. A victory against the Eagles would cut into the four-point gap between the Saints and the safe zone, here are three key factors that will be imperative to see Southampton claim all three points.

1. Scoring the First Goal

Southampton have scored the first goal in just seven of the thirty matches they have played thus far in the Premier League. In those games, they have a record of three wins, one draw, and three losses (one of those losses being the game against ten-man Wolves which cost Nathan Jones his job). That form is not exactly setting the league alight, but it is definitely not relegation level.

Meanwhile, in the games they have conceded first, the Saints fare much worse, with three wins, three draws, and a whopping seventeen losses. For a Southampton side that have been languishing at the bottom, the added confidence of an early goal will do wonders for their chances of securing a sorely needed victory against Roy Hodgson and Co.
