Aaron Ramsdale’s failed transfer moves away from Southampton have been revealed

Aaron Ramsdale wouldn't have foreseen his career turning out like this when he was Arsenal's reliable number one goalkeeper.

During the 2022/23 season, the five-time England international would collect a very impressive 14 clean sheets for Mikel Arteta's Gunners from 38 Premier League contests.

Even last season, he was tossed into Champions League action by Eddie Howe at Newcastle United.

Back at Southampton, however, he is now lost in the reserves, as Tonda Eckert continues to pick Daniel Peretz over him and rightly so, with the Israeli stopper very rarely letting down the German during his 48 games in charge of the promotion chasers to date.

It would have been expected that Ramsdale would be moved on this summer, with a Premier League outfit surely willing to take a risk on the forgotten keeper.

New reports that have come to light to suggest that there was some top-flight interest in the 28-year-old, but he wouldn't seal a move away from the South Coast for a multitude of reasons, as he continues to be a spectator to the Championship action from afar, rather than being an active participant.

Ramsdale's failed summer moves revealed

The Daily Mail has come out to reveal where Ramsdale could have possibly moved onto this summer.

Indeed, they have written that Leeds United had the Stoke-on-Trent-born keeper on their agenda, and he was 'firmly in their sights'.

Obviously, the Whites did eventually go on to win James Trafford in-between the sticks, but the one-time Newcastle loanee was on the back burner, allegedly, in case a move fell through for the 23-year-old.

A return to AFC Bournemouth, which is close to his home, was also floated, but a move back to the Cherries - who he represented between 2017-2020 - never became concrete.

Ramsdale further waved away interest from foreign parties in the Serie A such as Como, who are competing in the Champions League this season, to stay put on the South Coast, owing to becoming a father recently.

The way everything has panned out, Ramsdale seems to be content just rotting away in the reserves at the second tier giants.

But, it has also been exposed by the Daily Mail that Eckert would consider playing the number 32, if needs must.

He isn't completely disliked by Eckert

Eckert has come out several times this season to state that Peretz remains his chosen number one, despite Ramsdale's clear wealth of experience at the very top of the English game.

The 33-year-old is remaining staunchly loyal to what he knows, and for good reason, as the ex-Arsenal keeper has performed poorly whenever he's been used on the South Coast sparingly, leaking 68 goals during the Saints' horrid 2024/25 season, which ended - unsurprisingly - in relegation.

Still, if the ex-Bayern Munich figure were to pull up with an injury, which then leaves the number one jersey vacant, the Mail is reporting that Eckert would 'parachute' Ramsdale into the first team picture.

He clearly isn't a bad egg, either, despite the less than ideal position he currently holds in the pecking order, with his manager going out of his way to note that he is supporting his teammates behind his scenes.

Amazingly, the 6-foot-3 presence has only ever played two games in the Championship his entire career, when he was briefly on the books of Sheffield United, yet he does have a clean sheet next to his name at the punishing level.

For the time being, though, it looks like Ramsdale's chances of regular minutes will fall in the U21s if anywhere, with Peretz the main option Eckert will continue to fall back on.

Of course, this could all change in an instant if the set of circumstances handed to the Saints manager means he has to bring in the 28-year-old from the cold, if these reports are correct.
