In the pre-match build-up to Southampton vs Portsmouth on Sunday lunchtime on Sky Sports, a true EFL legend would announce that he was hanging up his boots.
Billy Sharp, at the age of 40, confirmed that he had called time on his illustrious career, with the veteran striker featuring for Doncaster Rovers last season, before finding himself without a club over the summer.
Noting that he "got every bit out of his career" when emotionally speaking on his retirement before the South Coast Derby, Sharp will go down in the EFL history books forevermore, as the Championship's all-time leading goalscorer.
Sharp would bag a ridiculous 130 goals, to be precise, and while he didn't score that many of them when situated at St Mary's, he is still held in high regard in Saints quarters for his short, but impactful stint at the club.
Sharp's brief but brilliant time at Southampton
Indeed, he would only score a slim nine second-tier goals on the South Coast, next to his mammoth 60 Championship strikes lining up for his beloved Sheffield United.
But, these nine goals were crucial, all the same, in a brief but brilliant part of his EFL journey, as Sharp helped the Saints win promotion to the Premier League, come the close of the 2011/12 season.
On the final day of that memorable campaign, Sharp would score and assist - in a team filled to the brim with heroes such as Jose Fonte and Adam Lallana - as the Championship titans won 4-0 over Coventry City, which sealed their passage up to the big time.
Away from his starring role in those final day celebrations, he will be further immortalised till the end of time at Southampton for scoring a brace in the South Coast Derby, with James Bree the latest goalscorer who will never be forgotten.
He isn't synonymous with the Saints, with the team you instantly think of when it comes to the EFL poacher being the Blades.
Indeed, Chris Wilder would note that he is the "best" he has worked alongside, when touching upon his retirement announcement.
But, he is still fondly remembered for being a crucial part of that promotion-winning team under Nigel Adkins, with the St. Mary's masses likely wishing him well for whatever he has planned post his playing days.
In the here and now, he could be an inspiring figure for this current group to look to for guidance, as they try to remain cool in their own hunt for promotion.
Southampton should look to Sharp for inspiration
Cyle Larin is definitely in the same ballpark as Sharp when it comes to being prolific in front of goal.
Across his globetrotting career to date, the Brampton Bagsman has 133 strikes - three more than his retired counterpart's Championship tally - and he has seven goals this season from only nine league encounters.
If anyone is going to be a Sharp-level goal machine that leads from the front to secure promotion, it's likely going to be Larin.
Divin Mubama would also love to be uttered in the same breath as the Sheffield-born menace in these parts for being a hero who was only at the club for a very short amount of time, owing to the young striker being on loan from Manchester City.
Everyone will need to step up to win promotion, with a full team effort leading to the Saints hitting the promised land at the close of the 2011/12 campaign.
But, it does help having a potent striker on your side, as Tonda Eckert banks on Larin to keep delivering the goods in crucial stages of games, like Sharp did all those years ago, with the iconic 40-year-old loving every minute of his brisk St Mary's spell.
