Following their victory in round one, Southampton fans are eagerly awaiting the Carabao Cup second round draw. In their first competitive match since spy-gate, Tonda Eckert's team avoided an upset and beat Colchester United 2-0 at the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday evening.

Second half strikes from Canadian international Cyle Larin, just 51 days on from the second of his two World Cup goals on home soil, and Irish youngster Romeo Akachukwu saw the Saints march on with a 2-0 victory in Essex, just off the A12. So, who next?

When is the Carabao Cup second round draw?

The Carabao Cup draw is scheduled for Monday 10 August, ahead of Sky Sports' Coverage of the night's Devon Derby between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City at Home Park. The draw is due to commence at around 7:20pm (BST). Hosted by presenter David Prutton, Jobi McAnuff and Jamie Mackie will be conducting the draw.

Who could Southampton draw in the Carabao Cup second round?

As is the case in the first round, the second round of the EFL Cup is regionalised into Northern and Southern sections. This is to reduce travel costs for both supporters and teams. Thus, there are 23 potential opponents for the Saints to face.

Southampton's potential Carabao Cup round 2 opponents:

  • Premier League: Brentford, Fulham, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Ipswich Town & Coventry City.
  • EFL Championship: Millwall, Cardiff City, Norwich City, Birmingham City, Watford, West Ham United & Charlton Athletic.
  • EFL League One: Stevenage, Cambridge United, AFC Wimbledon, Peterborough United, Reading, Luton Town, Leicester City & Leyton Orient.
  • EFL League Two: Walsall.
  • To be determined: Plymouth Argyle (L1) or Exeter City (L2).

Portsmouth's 3-1 defeat at the London Stadium against West Ham United eliminates the possibility of a South Coast derby. The two though will clash in the Championship at St Mary's on 11 October.

Southampton though could come up against six Premier League opponents, with the 11 top-flight outfits not competing in UEFA competition enter at this stage. Eckert would probably rather avoid a glamour clash with either Chelsea or Tottenham, or indeed a trip to Brentford or Fulham for that matter, albeit they did win at Craven Cottage in the FA Cup last season.

When will the Carabao Cup second round be played?

The Carabao Cup second round is scheduled for Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 August. This places it between the Saints' EFL Championship clashes with Stoke City and Millwall, both at St Mary's.

How can I watch Southampton in the Carabao Cup?

In the UK, Sky Sports' EFL broadcast deal includes live coverage of all 93 Carabao Cup fixtures. Free-to-air terrestrial channel ITV also have the rights to a minimum of one match per round. Unless the Saints were to draw Chelsea or Spurs, it seems unlikely their tie will be selected by ITV.

Elsewhere, the EFL Cup is broadcast live on CBS Sports Golazo and Paramount+ in the United States and beIN SPORTS in Australia.
