Russell Martin has been linked with the Rangers job. If he gets it, it would be his first managerial role since leaving Southampton last year.

Overall, Russell Martin has a good legacy at Southampton. The former Scotland international helped the Saints back to the Premier League last season via the playoff route.

When returning to the Premier League, Russell Martin made many signings. Some of them were more rewarding than others, but no manager has a 100% hit rate. So, why was he fired from Southampton right before Christmas last year?

Well, the short story is that something had to change. The Saints were rock bottom of the Premier League at the time and needed a new direction. After all, we were headed for the worst season in the history of the English top flight.

To provide a longer story, Russell Martin did nothing to bring Southampton out of that position. He remained rather stubborn and showed a lack of adaptability, sticking by his plan and nothing else. Of course, the results didn't change, so Southampton needed a change.

Now, Russell Martin could return to management at an unexpected club. According to a report from Robert Grieve of The Sun, Russell Martin is one of the managers linked with the recently opened Rangers job.

The Glaswegian side recently parted ways with their former manager Philippe Clement. Lasting 16 months at Ibrox Park, Clement was given his marching orders, meaning Rangers could now welcome back Russell Martin, a former defender of theirs.

While playing for Norwich City, Russell Martin was sent out on loan to Rangers in 2018. Now, just seven years after spending some time on loan, Martin could return to the helm.

Russell Martin has been without a job since being sacked by Southampton just before Christmas last year. However, there was always a looming feeling that he wouldn't be out of work for long. After all, he remained an attractive prospect to top clubs, since he's a manager with a clear philosophy.

So, if Russell Martin took on the Rangers job, most Southampton fans would wish him well. It would be nice to see him return to British football, especially to a club where he has history.
