Southampton are believed to be active in the 2025 January transfer window. However, their forecasted plan to do so might not go down well.

Southampton seem to lack direction right now. They are rock bottom of the Premier League standings and they are tipped by many to go down.

Considering the Saints fought so hard to come up originally, they cannot simply accept the reality of going straight back down. Indeed, they must do something about their lack of form this season but with the current players they have, it is not possible.

Therefore, Southampton fans must expect players to leave the club in January. Unfortunately, this is simply the way it must be to build for a better future.

How Southampton will approach January transfer window

Inspired by a claim by The Ugly Faithful, Southampton fans must consider the possibility that players will leave the club in January. In fact, it could be in Southampton's transfer plan to let players go, both freeing up some space for incomings, as well as hopefully funding new signings.

It has already been reported that Paul Onuachu could leave the club in January. The Nigerian striker, while possessing incredible technical ability, hasn't turned out to suit Southampton's system very well.

That said, the argument could also be made that Russell Martin should adapt his system to fit Onuachu, rather than adapting Onuachu to fit the system. Indeed, Martin is clearly a big fan of the tall Nigerian striker, so it wouldn't be the dumbest idea in the world. It might save the Saints a few quid on a new striker, after all.

There are a few other players who could leave Southampton in January. They are mostly players who don't get a look in under Russell Martin, yet could still help out financially to be moved on. The most obvious example is cutting Cornet's loan short - He just doesn't play, yet Southampton are paying his wages.
