Léo Scienza will be desperate to break Southampton goal drought at the Hawthorns

Leo Scienza picked up an injury when he last played West Bromwich Albion away. He's fit to start mid-week, though, and he will be wanting to break his goal drought against the Baggies.

Cyle Larin is likely to miss another Southampton game as the Saints prepare to do battle with West Bromwich Albion later on tonight in the Championship.

Indeed, the Canadian striker hasn't featured for the South Coast giants since he hobbled off the pitch against Bolton Wanderers, with the Hawthorns clash perhaps coming too soon for him as he tries to get back to full fitness.

Tonda Eckert's men have dealt well with him being sidelined, as a 3-2 win away at West Ham United was collected without the seven-goal marksman leading the line.

Additionally, four goals were put into the back of the Queens Park Rangers net last time out, even with Larin nowhere to be seen, as the Saints beat the R's 4-1.

While the goals have been flowing from all over the pitch since the Brampton Bagsman picked up an injury, Leo Scienza finds himself in the midst of an unfortunate drought, which he will hope to break at the Hawthorns.

Scienza's ongoing drought

Scienza last scored for Eckert and Co. against Swansea City, which fell all the way back on the 8th of September, as the automatic promotion contenders were humbled 3-1 at St. Mary's.

Since then, the Brazilian has been uncharacteristically quiet in front of goal, as six Championship games have passed him by without a single of strike of his own hitting the back of the net.

He hasn't even picked up an assist, with the ex-Heidenheim winger fading to the background, compared with the likes of Kuryu Matsuki, who has bagged three goals across his last four second tier appearances in a sharp upturn of form.

It would be rash to say that the number seven has been lacklustre across this goalless string of matches, though, as he registered four shots on the QPR goal last time out.

Moreover, watching over the Hammers highlights, Scienza is at the heart of a lot of the exhilarating counter attack moves that resulted in goals in that wild game, with two key passes amassed.

Heading to the Hawthorns later on, the tricky 28-year-old will be very keen to break out of this slight rut, as he doesn't have the best memories of the Baggies' home ground from last campaign.

He would love to break it vs West Brom

Eckert's side salvaged a last-gasp draw on their travels to the West Midlands last season, courtesy of a now injury-stricken Larin scoring a 91st minute equaliser.

While there would have been a raucous atmosphere in the away end after that dramatic leveller, there would have been a lot of concerned fans in this same pool of supporters when Scienza went down with an injury after 37 minutes.

As a result of this injury being picked up against the Baggies, this outing to West Brom proved to be his only Championship clash of March, as he was absent for three straight second tier matches for the rest of the month.

The out-of-form South American would love to return to the scene of where he got injured to reenergise his current unfolding season, with the quick attacker actually scoring against West Brom last campaign during the home game at St. Mary's, as he opened the scoring during a frantic 3-2 victory in favour of Eckert's hosts.

It would be a reminder of the 28-year-old's star quality, which has faded in recent times with his lack of output.

Thankfully, Southampton are the very definition of a team, with so many different players chipping in with memorable moments in recent times to guide the promotion hopefuls to victories.

Indeed, James Bree has scored against Portsmouth and West Ham, as he has ventured forward from the right-back spot regularly.

Rather selfishly for Scienza, though, he would love to be a match-winner under the floodlights later today, as he hopefully lasts the full 90 minutes this time around and goes on to celebrate with his adoring away fans at the full-time whistle.
