Tonda Eckert's tenure as Southampton manager has become rocky recently. After impressing as caretaker boss following Will Still's sacking, Eckert is now winless in his last seven Championship matches.
Eckert produced a new manager bounce when he was the interim head coach, winning four out of five games. This led to him getting the job permanently. However, the Southampton hierarchy may now be regretting their decision to give the club's Under-21s manager the job full-time.
This is Eckert's first transfer window as a manager, with his previous experiences of the period in the season coming as an assistant at clubs including Genoa and Barnsley. The only player Southampton has brought in is Daniel Peretz on loan from Bayern Munich.
Peretz has conceded two goals in his opening two games playing for the Saints. Southampton beat Doncaster Rovers 3-2 in Peretz's debut but went on to lose 2-1 to Hull City in their first Championship match.
As for outgoings, Damion Downs returned to the Bundesliga 2 on loan at Hamburger SV. This is embarrassing for the Saints as there were high hopes for Downs, who was a £7 million capture from FC Koln.
Gavin Bazuna joined Stoke City on loan as his game time in goal for the Saints was going to be limited with Peretz's arrival. Additionally, Ronnie Edwards joined Queens Park Rangers permanently after spending time on loan with the London side.
Eckert has done little to boost Southampton fans' hopes that there will be more incomings in the transfer window. He was quoted by Alfie House of the Southern Daily Echo, saying, "We shouldn't take any desperate decisions. There are still a few days and I am sure we will make something happen."
What more business could Southampton do in the January transfer window?
The Saints have been linked with Tyrese Hall of Notts County. However, he is only 20, and whilst he has starred for Notts County in League 2, he is unproven at Championship level.
Southampton could do with an additional center-back, and Roggerio Nyakossi of the Dutch side OH Leuven, as well as Santiago Ramos Mingo, who plays for the Brazilian team Bahia, are two names mentioned as possible arrivals.
Sunderland's back-up goalkeeper, Anthony Patterson, was also linked with the Saints. However, a deal for him now appears unlikely with the arrival of Peretz. Joe Arribo could also leave Southampton and return to his former club, Rangers.
