Championship playoffs legend Troy Deeney has taken Paul Merson's role in voicing a shambolic St. Mary's prediction.

A proper week is left for every Premier League fan who loves hearing Paul Merson's unbiased gameweek takes. For Southampton fans, those pre-game rituals were an enthusiasm eraser as flipping Merson's script was a tough nut to crack.

In the Championship, the former Arsenal hitman only comments during the playoffs season so there's no use for Saints to start looking for his mic. At the same time, there is no shortage of pundits in this country, so, opinions are always bound to come.

For today's clash, promotion knockouts legend Troy Deeney has some words for the Saints, which let's be clear, isn't all sweet and sunshine.

In his own words, Football League World quoted Deeney saying: "I fancy Wrexham just to knick this, you know. Wrexham 2-1 Southampton. I think Southampton will be good over the course of the season, but to start the season, I think they're going to struggle."

Deeney's opinion will have Saints wishing to laugh at full-time

The good side of the 2-1 scorecard was visible at the start of Southampton's 23/24 second-division run, but propping the Saints for the bad side of it, that's taking it too far. If this verdict had preceded a Watford trip, then Deeney would have been understandable for all his services in a Hornets shirt.

However, tipping Wrexham for glory just shows that he perceives Southampton as a team in disarray.

Could there be helplessness pouring from the Saints faces? Yes, but the ninetieth-minute reaction will be one of satisfaction and joy as long as Will Still puts these four high-pressure performers to races.

Hopefully, we get to cherish a 3-0 outcome but the look on Deeney's face will be priceless for the home fans if it's Southampton sneaking away a 2-1 triumph.
