Former Southampton star Victor Wanyama has joined Scottish second-division outfit Dunfermline Athletic.

Every Southampton fan would agree that the Saints club had their peak in the mid-2010s era. Now, while credit goes to the club’s players and staff, fans mustn’t forget Celtic’s role as a talent feeder, laying the foundation for Southampton’s success.

Hearing this, you probably thought of Virgil van Dijk or Fraser Forster’s key moves from Celtic to Southampton, right? But today, we talk about an underrated transfer hero, Victor Wanyama.

Arriving at St. Mary's in July 2013, Wanyama became an invaluable asset in Southampton’s midfield for the next three years. Interestingly, those were the best consecutive years Southampton saw in their Premier League history.

But while for most, Wanyama's legacy goes unnoticed, there are many like ex-Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino, who knew the pivot's importance.

Notably, Wanyama's brilliant performances had the Argentinian manager convinced to resign him during his Tottenham project. Later, he became a key part of the Spurs squad that reached the Champions League final.

By now, it's easy to recognize the distinguishable European success Wanyama saw in his career. Sadly, those days are now just a distant memory.

This is because, as per Daily Echo reports, being 33 currently, the Kenyan star has chosen a move to Scottish second-division club Dunfermline Athletic.

While it's speculation, this transfer likely closes the door on Wanyama making another return to European football.

What's interesting still? Even though nearing an illustrious career, the former Saints hero has chosen an exciting challenge. Joining a relegation-threatened Dunfermline side, Wanyama has portrayed the fighting character for which he is renowned even now.

Honestly, whether Wanyama’s heroics help Dunfermline escape relegation is secondary. What matters now is appreciating the legend while we can still watch him on the pitch.

After all, though he feels underappreciated as a Saints hero, a time shall come when the fans will relish the midfielder's brilliance in awe.
