Southampton have faced four consecutive defeats in as many Premier League matches; however, they have a massive home game against Ipswich Town at the St. Mary's Stadium. The Saints have faced two quality teams, Newcastle United and Manchester United, and have played two of the most improved teams in the English top flight, Nottingham Forest and Brentford, but the match against Ipswich Town is a balanced fixture. Both sides achieved promotion from the Championship last season and are yet to take a win in this Premier League season.

Moreover, if these two sides couldn't find winning momentum in the upcoming matches, they could be in a relegation battle towards the end of the season. Asked about this being an important match in this season, Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna said,
""I don’t really see it as that. Every game in the Premier League is important to us; every game is vital and a challenge.
- Kieran McKenna
Every game is a great opportunity, and this weekend is no different. We’re looking forward to it.""
Although both sides haven't started the season on a high note, Ipswich Town have managed to take two points in the recent league matches with a 1-1 draw with Fulham and a 0-0 draw with Brighton. However, Russell Martin's side haven't taken any points in this season and still need to improve their overall performance despite a good display in the first half an hour against Manchester United. Last season, Ipswich Town took a convincing 1-0 win over Southampton and registered a comeback 3-2 win, which dashed the Saints hopes of securing direct promotion and had to advance to the Premier League through the Championship playoffs instead.
Therefore, Southampton needs to take the three points from the match to improve their position in the league table, as they are currently nineteenth while Ipswich Town is seventeenth. Also, it remains to be seen whether manager Russell Martin makes some lineup changes from the recent Carabao Cup third-round win.
