Former Manchester United and Arsenal stars are set to rival ex-Saints boss Ruben Selles for the Plymouth Argyle vacancy.
Since Southampton have been demoted to the Championship, they have again started commanding a good amount of respect from the entire division. Well, this factor might seem insignificant but no one can deny that non-Premier League clubs will definitely fancy raiding the Saints for their summer targets.
And that holds true for Southampton's past and present staff too. Just take a look at Ruben Selles who is still held in high regard by the Plymouth Argyle board despite getting sacked in the past month.
Now, there is no shortage of out of contract managers throughout the season but Ruben's pride-saving Premier League work at St. Mary's still stands out from the crowd.
Selles might hold less hiring appeal than midfield duo
Yet, bring the Premier League landscape into discussion and Ruben's Southampton tag doesn't remain that much eye-catching. Unfortunately, the ex-interim Saint has to face this brutal reality while navigating his way to the Plymouth Arygle hotseat.
According to a report from Plymouth Herald, Ruben awaits competition from Manchester United hero Tom Cleverley and Arsenal fan favourite Jack Wilshere. Honestly, Ruben's strong contender status has now merely been reduced to an outside favourite.
And why wouldn't it be as those two Premier League heavyweights have a history of nurturing some of the best geniuses of the game, thus, a third-division outfit like Plymouth is unlikely to try things out differently.
Now, Wilshere might come as a new coaching name among the Southampton fanbase but Cleverley doesn't fall into that category. Merely days before Will Still's Southampton announcement, Cleverley made his best efforts to win over the Saints board which surely didn't sit well among the fans.
Luckily, that never happened but should Cleverley assume Plymouth's managerial duties, some portion of Southampton fans are sure to judge him by his next season's performances. Apart from that, let's see where Ruben Selles eventually manages next.
