Southampton's promotion-winning manager Russell Martin is close to shaking hands with direct rivals Leicester as their new boss.
Weeks ago, out of nothing, ex-Southampton boss Russell Martin was rumoured for a Leicester job in the Championship. Well, as surprising as it was for the Saints fans, this sudden approach by his former rivals might have shocked the gaffer himself, too.
After all, having been called out by the EFL pundits within days of the links, it stood clear as a no for promotion favourites Leicester to proceed with Martin.
Even if not for it, the ex-Saints boss's generous treatment to his former club, ever since his departure, seemed to rule out any move, at least to their direct rivals.
Yet, for the rumours that stood done and dusted for Southampton fans in April itself, it's becoming the eye-widening reality now. And like, no one saw coming, ex-Saints boss Russell Martin is very close to taking a Leicester job to succeed Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
Russell Martin tipped to return in surprise Leicester managerial role
As per Mail Online, Leicester are in advanced talks with the 39-year-old Scottish boss with a deal to take place soon. With just official details left to be agreed upon, Russell Martin looks set to return to his specialised Championship role in months, again.
Honestly, with Southampton having themselves sacked Russell Martin in December, the manager had every right to join any club now. But while this decision hits logically, isn't it unfair emotionally?
Having led Southampton's Championship promotion just a year ago, this Leicester job take-up will always remain obscure to Southampton fans. Except if it's for his idleness or a lucrative pay packet on offer.
Anyways, what's certain is the awkwardness that will be felt the next time Southampton and Leicester meet. While the rivalry between the two clubs is sure to grow big, Russell Martin might be encountered with boos and chants flowing from the St. Mary's faithful.
Yet, while even imagining these scenes guarantees goosebumps for Saints fans, Southampton's aim must remain clear to win. Thankfully, they are on track to this with an upcoming Will Still appointment.
