Ryan Manning starring for Southampton has side effects for one player

Ryan Manning's sensational form in this Championship season has wowed Saints fans, but it's an unthinkable side-effect for one player who doesn't compete with Manning for the same role.

The last time Southampton fans got shivering thoughts over the left back spot was during the Saints' preseason trips. Such is the calmness Ryan Manning pours into the fanbase that they don't shift tabs from their star fullback, leave aside if he is the only leftmost defender strolling on the training pitch.

Charlie Taylor has entered in his second month at West Brom and Welington has recovery weeks to pass before displacing Manning.

Hence, those two must be concerned the most with the Irishman's top-notch season. Rather, Elias Jelert is suffering the side effects, although a minimum of two centre-backs separate him and Manning when they are fielded together.

Jelert's return to prominence rests on Ryan Manning's duties

Viewing through Jelert's lens, Will Still is at fault with Daily Echo quoting him: "We were playing more of a winger in that position and a more defensive player with Ryan Manning on the other side, trying to unbalance it that way."

Let's throw one Jelert remedy out, quickly, which is restricting Manning's involvement. His two free-kicks have proved helpful straws for Saints in testing times and an imaginary third in front of Portsmouth could have been iconic, but one can't be repenting on the derby always.

If Still rewatches those games and elects to hand more attacking license to Manning, then the 22-year-old loanee can catch some good sleep.

With that, Jelert will be termed the deep-sitting wideman and get the audition space he has often longed for. The question arises, when will Still turn to those tactics, league games or wait until the FA Cup.

And just saying, but an underwhelming fitness could then be Jelert's worst opposition there, so he must keep his health in check while his regular turns come.
