Southampton adds Espanyol defender Ruben Sanchez to their right-back reinforcement option list as they hope to inspire a charge for the Championship title.

Recently, Saints heard of Russell Martin's Conor Coady plan, and while it's been a busy few days, no fan would have missed that. And rightly so, for how Martin ain't just overcoming a previous fear to his benefit, but benefiting the Saints by weakening their promotion rivals.

But what's interesting is that, now, Southampton are tipped to take a leaf out of their ex-gaffer's planning as they move into their preseason ahead.

Like it or not, but after a shaky winning start against Eastleigh, the St. Mary's faithful are in fear of a challenging Spanish tour next. Now, their on-field preparations go in full swing, but additionally, Southampton is preparing an off-field blow on opponents Espanyol.

It's because the Saints plan for Espanyol right-back Ruben Sanchez as the club adds the 24-year-old to their wishlist for full-back reinforcement.

Recently, journalist Matteo Moretto confirmed Southampton's rising interest in Sanchez, saying: "Several clubs are inquiring about Rubén: Rayo, Oviedo, Sassuolo, and Southampton are some of those keeping tabs on him."

Ruben Sanchez' second division win must excite Saints for a move

Honestly, with just over a week remaining in their friendly clash, it's obvious that Southampton look beyond the Espanyol tie for Sanchez. And amusingly, this hope strengthens, realising the full-back's career trophies.

That's because, despite a quite limited role, Sanchez holds a second division title win with Espanyol for the promotion in the 2020/21 season. Needless to say, the full-back can be a vital addition to the Southampton squad as the side sets out to hunt for a maiden Championship title next.

From a sporting perspective, Sanchez's profile is as attractive as his aforementioned success. Having established himself as a second division regular on a loan spell at Granada, a Championship transition shouldn't be challenging for the 24-year-old.

Even without any lofty ambition, Ruben Sanchez comes as a significant right-back option that would help Southampton's Championship cause. But the Saints need to ensure they get the deal over the line, not falling prey to the previous failure in Max Johnston's case.
