Simon Rusk comments that if Southampton put their best game in all aspects, their current squad may contest in the Champions League.
In this season of hardships, no Saints person has been untouched by a downfall, but arguably none as hitting as the most recent one of Southampton's interim manager, Simon Rusk.
Once arrived as a club saviour weeks ago, the boss stands more of a fallen hero in front of the fans now. And how cruel that, once the Fulham game, which brought him into contention to lead the Saints again, has initiated his rough patch this time.
To the extent that now each single call of the manager only widens the ruckus for their next season preparations.
But, honestly, the manager hasn't been wrongly condemned most of the time. And in case you don't agree, just listen to the manager's bizarre recent comments.
So, every football fan would be aware of the recently concluded Champions League semi-finals. Well, like the last time, no English club has made it to the Finals again.
But what does it have to do with Southampton, right? Well, only until one gets to know boss Rusk's eyebrow-raising claim.
Simon Rusk believes Southampton could've featured in the UCL
Surprisingly, in a competition where the best English clubs, Liverpool, Man City, got outplayed, Rusk believes the Saints could have competed in it.
Recently, as quoted by the Daily Echo, Rusk claimed: "As I alluded to last week, if we were going to be all things in all areas of the game, we would probably be competing for the Champions League."
Now, this statement from boss Rusk doesn't help but make even Saints fans giggle. After all, having not featured in the biggest European competition ever in their history, how can one think of it in their lowest phase?
Still, let's hope, even if as a farce motivation, this claim induces a sense of competitiveness in the young Southampton side, who are to face Man City next. Maybe, Rusk's mistimed arrow works wonders in their next result?
