The Saints are in desperate need of solidifying its' backline if the team has any hope of making it back into the Premier League next season. Now a Championship side, Southampton made a big move for young defender Joshua Quarshie.
Who is Joshua Quarshie?
Quarshie is a German Under-20 international who has played club football for Hoffenheim. The 20-year-old earned his Bundesliga debut at the age of 18, but spent most of his time playing in the German second tier.
Quarshie has a big presence in the backline, standing at the height of 6 feet 5 inches. His stature will give him an added ability to clear crosses in the box and present a potential attacking threat in the opposition's box on corners and free-kicks.
The German international also has an electric pace. His statistics made him the fastest player in 2. Bundesliga this season. His experience in the German second tier will give him a good boost ahead of making his Championship debut with Southampton.
The hope will be that Southampton can continue to develop Quarshie and he will become a key player for the English club. With new manager Will Still coming in, Southampton are looking to play fast, energetic football, which is what Quarshie can provide with his speed.
Quarshie made 20 appearances in 2. Bundesliga this season, but he'll hope to become a staple in Southampton's defense. A young player like Quarshie can be just the player to try and help bring the club back to the Premier League.
How can Quarshie grow into his role?
Quarshie brings youth to the Southampton team. There are plenty of things the young defender still has to learn, but he'll likely play alongside some more experienced players.
With the number of matches that Southampton will play in the Championship, Quarshie will gain even more experience professionally. The young defender has already played over 80 professional games, giving him an added advantage.
Thanks to his physicality, he should have no trouble playing in the tougher and more physical games that English football offers. Group Technical Director Johannes Spors spoke about Quarshie saying, "His outstanding athleticism makes him a natural fit for the energetic playing style our new manager hopes to implement."
Southampton have high hopes for their first signing of the summer. With many departures expected, especially in defense, the club will be making even more signings at the back and Quarshie will have the chance to play with some of the very best.
