Tonda Eckert will now be dreaming of more than one Wembley trip for Southampton this season, as the Saints are only one stage away in the FA Cup from reaching the coveted semi-finals.

Their quarter-final dreams came true after a resilient showing at Premier League hosts Fulham saw the Championship underdogs come away from the hotly-contested tie as 1-0 victors, as Ross Stewart stole all the plaudits with a last-gasp penalty kick.

Amazingly, this season marks 50 years since Southampton last lifted the famous trophy, and as the only Championship side now left in the esteemed contest, the Saints will hope they can fly the EFL flag high, and not crash out at the next round.

Could Southampton go all the way?

The cynical St Mary's supporter might well view the FA Cup as an unwelcome distraction from matters in the league, no matter how glorious the Cup upset was against Fulham.

After all, more games to come in the historic competition to come mean the already congested fixture list will become even more crowded, as a glamour tie to follow potentially derails Eckert and Co.'s promotion bid.

Of course, the more rose-tinted Southampton follower will just see view the memorable FA Cup run currently happening on the South Coast as a free-hit patch of games.

It does look very unlikely that Southampton would go all the way and win the competition, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City still left in the hat.

But, funnier things have happened, as the Saints attempt to relive their 1979 magic all over again, no matter how far-fetched it could be to pull off.

Eckert certainly believes his team is capable of achieving the unthinkable, as he has now sent out a rallying cry to his troops, after the drama of the win at the Cottagers had settled down.

Eckert delivers clear message about the FA Cup

Eckert will believe that his side are capable of going toe-to-toe with whoever their next opponents are in the FA Cup, having masterminded a thrilling turnaround in their Championship form, ever since taking on the St Mary's reins, back in November.

The South Coast giants have picked up a sublime 15 wins since the German was given the full-time job, after previously working in the U21 system at the Saints.

This crazy turnaround in fortunes now means Southampton is only four points shy of disurpting the playoff pack n the Championship. Y

et, Eckert isn't just content with this domestic success, as he wants his team to "step on the gas" in the Cup, too, after witnessing the special win at Craven Cottage.

He said, post-match, when questioned on the magic of the Cup: “You see how much it means to the club.

It’s been 50 years since we won it for the last time. It’s important if you get that little bit of a taste how it feels to win football games, you just stay on the gas and keep going.

“When we arrive on the coach and you look and the whole street is full of Southampton supporters and behind the goal is full of Southampton supporters, you can definitely say we feel the importance of it.”

During a season that has already seen Eckert relight a fire at Southampton by being a breath of fresh air from the dug-out, he could very much cement himself in the club's hall-of-fame by pushing them to the FA Cup final.

If the likes of Wigan Athletic and arch rivals Portsmouth can win the esteemed honours in years gone by, what's stopping Southampton from being another unexpected champion?
