Southampton chase in-form French attacker who just missed league's golden boot

Southampton have scouted impressive French youngster Willem Geubbels to potentially lead their attack after coming on the back of a Golden Boot push.

Last week, Southampton fans came to know about one of the club's less talked about transfer mistakes in Bryan Mbeumo. But another such talking point lies in Mbeumo two outings against the Saints.

Combining his stats from those two evenings, the 25-year-old found the back of the net four times which is what Saints top-scorer Paul Onuachu could manage all season.

Isn't it humiliating, Southampton fans? When even other demoted outfits also employed one of the previous season's finest strikers on their books.

Indeed, that's quite shambolic and now, Southampton must think about resolving this frustrating situation up front. And what better than recruiting a number nine who is no stranger to ranking higher in the league's scoring charts.

Geubbels can reach double digits in goals at St. Mary's

With that in mind, Foot Mercato have suggested that the Saints are chasing the signature of freely scoring Frenchman Willem Geubbels.

And going by the Transfermarkt stats, Geubbels ranked fourth among the clinical finishers in Switzerland's top-flight. Still, some fans might warn cautions about this move as Geubbels is plying his trade outside of Europe's top five leagues.

There is no denying that, but the 23-year-old made his name in the Ligue 1 before and it hardly takes a guess that Will Still has also arrived from that division.

Connecting the dots, the duo are more likely to be on the same page as far as playing styles are concerned, or at least can help bring the positives from the French game into the Championship.

And transitioning from such a robust league to the relatively less competitive second-division football can be much easier for Geubbels than many supporters would imagine.

Hence, this deal can work better than the many signing bloopers Southampton have been accustomed to doing now. So, let's see whether the Saints hold this optimism, too.
