Will Still's former club Lens is leading the race to sign Southampton's full-back target Max Johnston.

Admit it or not, but all Southampton fans have been chuckling since yesterday knowing Will Still's contacts that may help them sign keeper Matt Ryan. Or in fact, overall, for the plethora of brilliant additions Still can bring to Southampton, by using his previous ties.

But while the boss' former Ligue 1 connections have only been tipped to help the Saints till now, it may now give them a haunting memory forever.

That's because while Southampton played smart utilising Will Still's English return decision, the manager's former club, Lens, is planning an avenged transfer move on the Saints. And it's for their priority full-back target, Max Johnston.

So far, even though not the favourites, Southampton had been an active participant in Johnston's transfer race. But now the tables have turned against them, as Lens takeover the Saints' interest in the 21-year-old.

Recently, journalist Antony Joseph confirmed the update, mentioning: "Nice & Lens have expressed their interest in Sturm Graz right-back Max Johnston. The French duo are the latest of a host of clubs across Europe keen on signing the in-demand 21yo."

Saints fans must be left red-faced after recent Johnston update

Honestly, Southampton fans should act unfazed by this rumour having been disapproved by Johnston before, yet getting outplayed by Will Still's former club will surely sting them. Especially given that being an established Top Flight side, they are a favourite to complete Johnston's signing.

Intriguingly, still, while the fans' frustration surfaces from this recent transfer update, it may be based on their disappointment with Still.

Like it or not, but despite being touted as a perfect intermediary for crucial transfers, the Saints haven't benefitted from the boss' links so far. While it's not even a week in the summer window, most fans had expected a much more rigorous transfer window start under the manager.

But again, much can't be said on Will Still's part either, who is tipped to return from holidays soon. Well, it may not be longer until Still wins the confidence of Saints fans again, and let's hope that this time comes soon for the growing impatient Saints fans.
