Southampton has been through a horrid time so far this season, but after they picked up all three points from their visit to Bramall Lane last night, things could finally be looking up for the Saints.
Will Still has made the case that he needs time to get the best out of these players, and if last night's performance is anything to go by, then he is well on his way there.
The new manager has already made a few tricky calls, but that's a testament to his character. He isn't here to be liked; he's here to get Southampton back in the Premier League.
With key players leaving, which was inevitable after last season's relegation, the Saints fanbase has needed to become accustomed to new heroes. One of those is a player who was hiding in plain sight this whole time.
Nathan Wood has been Southampton's most reliable player this season
Nathan Wood has been a complete revelation since entering the starting lineup. He is yet to put a foot wrong this season, and last night's display against Sheffield United was further proof that Will Still must continue to give him minutes.
Last season, Wood only started nine Premier League games, and this was only because injuries elsewhere in the squad allowed him to. Otherwise, he probably wouldn't have been given a look-in.
So far this season, though, Wood has started seven games, including four in the Championship, and three in the Carabao Cup. Still is showing more and more that he values Wood in the backline, and as more time progresses, he'll hope for even more chances to prove himself.
Against Sheffield United, Wood was one of the best players on the pitch. He would have felt hard done by to not keep a clean sheet, but it was because of him that Sheffield United rarely had a sniff at goal.
According to FotMob, Wood made an impressive three tackles, one block, 11 clearances, five headed clearances, one interception and four recoveries. He was also not dribbled past at any point in the game, a real stalwart performance from the English center back.
The one thing that we like the most about Nathan Wood is how aggressive he is. When he's in defensive situations, it's clear that he only has eyes for the ball, and he'll stop at nothing to get it.
We all know that Wood has an impressive physical frame, but it'd be redundant if he didn't use it. Wood is not afraid to put his body on the line, and it's a real breath of fresh air for those around him in defense, but also the goalkeeper.
Alex McCarthy is an experienced goalkeeper, and he seems to be getting the nod over Gavin Bazunu at the moment. While Macca can fend for himself, he would appreciate having a brick wall ahead of him.
Look, Wood's form could just be temporary. We don't want to jump the gun just yet, but we don't have a bad word to say about him recently. By a country mile, he's been Southampton's most reliable player at the start of this campaign.
