Southampton must sign this star if promotion is sealed

Southampton must make this signing a priority in the summer if they return to the Premier League.

Southampton just cannot be stopped at the moment, as they got the better of Norwich City on Wednesday night 1-0, in a very even Championship contest.

On another night, the Canaries might well have come away from the tense affair with something to show for their dogged display, but another away victory - to add to their seven for the campaign - wasn't forthcoming.

Instead, the Saints reigned supreme courtesy of a first-half strike from Finn Azaz, with 13 games unbeaten now, resulting in Tonda Eckert and Co. pushing into the playoff positions, for the first time since the opening weekend.

If you were a betting man, you wouldn't discount the Saints going all the way and winning the playoffs now, as they hit their stride at the perfect possible time.

While Eckert's men are an entertaining, free-flowing watch, as evidenced in their 61 goals for the season, recent results have also seen a grit come to the forefront, when edging out back-and-forth contests.

Indeed, across February to date, the Saints have won every contest that has been thrown their way by the odd goal, rather than dispatching of the opposition with ease.

Eckert has his trusty loan goalkeeper Daniel Peretz to thank for such assured performances at the back, with a mighty seven saves keeping Norwich at bay, who amassed 1.11 xG come the full-time whistle.

Already, there should be plans in place to try and tempt the Bayern Munich loanee to St. Mary's for good, with promotion making it paramount for Southampton to seal a permanent deal, to try and cope with the earth-shuddering step-up.

Why Peretz must be a priority signing

Southampton fans won't want me to comment on how they fared last time they were in the all-consuming division, but it does need to be said.

Last season, the Saints sank to the Championship in sorry fashion, having finished at the very bottom of the unforgiving league, on just 12 points.

Giving up 86 goals along the way, this must be a warning to those at St. Mary's now, of what happens if you head into the division, horrendously underprepared.

While snapping up Peretz won't immediately make the Saints a staunch side, if promotion is sealed, his performances in the Championship so far will encourage those on the South Coast, that they could give survival a better go.

Immediately fitting into his new second-tier environment with six clean sheets already under his belt, the 25-year-old has also tasted some elite action, too, with the Bavarian giants, with a sprinkling of Bundesliga and Champions League outings, here and there.

Further labelled as being "unbelievable" since walking into the building in January by goalscoring hero Azaz, it would reportedly cost Southampton a weighty ÂŁ7m to snap up the in-form stopper, past this season.

This feels like a reasonable price to pay to win such an assured pair of gloves for good, with Peretz surely jumping at the chance to be a Premier League star, if he does stick around.

Of course, the Saints have to actually clinch a playoff spot, still, and then go back to Wembley to move up to the promised land, but with Peretz in-between the sticks, the Saints have a keeper they can trust on the big stage.
