Southampton’s main promotion rival has just confirmed a better signing than Divin Mubama

Divin Mubama has now been officially unveiled as Southampton's fifth summer signing.

Mubama was announced just before the Saints' opening training session at St. Mary's took place on Tuesday afternoon, with the South Coast masses treated to a last-minute announcement before watching their beloved team in the flesh.

There is a lot of excitement in the air about this loan acquisition, as the London-born poacher has a hefty 86 career goals next to his name.

To add some necessary context, though, a fair share of those have come about on the youth pitches of both West Ham United and Manchester City, but it's still an eye-catching goal tally, all the same.

Mubama has been saying all the right things, too, in his first interview after he signed, as he revealed his own excitement about pulling on Southampton red and white, and how much he's looking forward to competing with Cyle Larin up top.

Southampton fans would have been crying out for some fresh blood in the attacking department after watching Ben Brereton Diaz continually fire blanks against Colchester United in the EFL Cup.

With Cameron Archer likely to leave, too, with Wrexham apparently interested in his services, Mubama sticks out clearly as the new second-in-command option to Larin, who will be entrusted to go toe-to-toe with the Brampton Bagsman, like the departed Ross Stewart did so effortlessly last campaign.

He seems up for the challenge of being the Canadian's main internal competitor, with Mubama stating, in his first interview after joining: "Competition like that is always healthy, and in a team like this you know you're always going to get chances."

Going further to note that Tonda Eckert is a "top manager" who he has felt an "instant connection" with, this has all the ingredients of being a smart, short-term buy that can, hopefully, fire the South Coast giants to promotion.

While Mubama does stick out as a natural-born goalscorer, when assessing his red-hot youth numbers, he is relatively inexperienced in the men's game, with only five goals put away last season on loan at Stoke City.

Still, securing the loan signing of a Man City youth product will always catch the eye and steal headlines.

But, when it comes to weighing up the loan deal for Mubama being secured, next to one of the Saints' main promotion rivals sealing this outrageous deal, Southampton's promotion foe has sealed a more immediately impressive pick-up that should stand them in even better stead to win the Championship title.

Mubama will take time to get up to speed with what is expected of him in the men's game at St. Mary's, having excelled exclusively, for the most part, in the bubble of youth football.

On the contrary, Manor Solomon won't need anytime whatsoever to learn the ropes at West Ham United, as he is a proven dynamo in the gruelling division.

The electric 27-year-old was an absolute joke the last time he was in the intense setting of the Championship, with a stunning ten goals and 12 assists collected for Leeds United during the 2024/25 season, helping to crown the Whites as champions.

Leeds-based journalist Adam Pope would go as far as to label Solomon as being a "different level" when picking up goals and assists for fun in West Yorkshire.

Mubama will be aiming to play his part in the Saints' own promotion tale, but to expect these devastating numbers from the raw striker would be a tall order.

Whereas, with Solomon, he should be able to pick up from where he last left off, with the likes of Jarrod Bowen next to him in the ridiculous Hammers attack.

Both the ex-Tottenham Hotspur forward, and the brand-new Saints number 28, will butt heads with each other, funnily enough, when West Ham travel to the South Coast later this month for the second round of the EFL Cup.

The two fresh signings mentioned will be looking to make the difference in this hotly contested tie, with the aim, too, of scoring the decisive goals to fire their respective teams into the promotion conversation.
