Tonda Eckert will be hoping he can channel his inner Russell Martin at the close of the season, as Southampton return to the Premier League via the glorious playoffs route.

The very impressive Saints moved into the top-six after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Norwich City on Wednesday night, with a 13-game unbeaten stretch deserving of such a coveted position.

The aim will now be to stay there, to pull off what Martin achieved, with the current out-of-work manager immortalising himself in the Saints hall-of-fame forever, when securing a 1-0 win over Leeds United at Wembley in 2024, to take the South Coast side back to the promised land.

Eckert guiding Southampton to their second playoff triumph in the space of two years would, arguably, be even sweeter than this magical moment, with the German a rookie head coach, still, during his first full season as a manager.

He's passing the tests that keep coming his way with flying colours, with the 34-year-old no doubt delighted to have the group of players he has at his disposal.

In particular, he is surely loving the thrill of working alongside Finn Azaz, who now has ten goals for the season as a blistering attacking playmaker, after bagging the winner against the Canaries.

With six assists next to his name, too, in Championship action, the Irishman is arguably one of the most exciting attacking players in the entire division.

He will be hungry to achieve another promotion, having previously guided former employers Plymouth Argyle up to the Championship.

Equally eager, no doubt, to test himself in the Premier League, Azaz had a clear message to deliver at the close of the mid-week win, about the challenges ahead for his confident side.

Azaz delivers clear message about Southampton's promotion ambitions

Southampton won't want to rest on their laurels at the moment, however, as one misstep due to taking your foot off the gas could be costly to your promotion dreams.

Instead, Azaz summed up the ambitious nature of the group at the moment, who must think they're invincible, having last lost in the second tier in mid-January to Hull City.

He said, rather confidently, at the end of the Canaries triumph: "To be honest the mentality in the dressing room now is that we’re looking at fifth, we’re looking at fourth, we’re looking at the next game.

We’re not thinking 'we’re in sixth now'. We’re looking at where we want to go."

This will be music to the ears of his adoring Saints faithful, with it not out of the question that the South Coast giants can push up the league even more.

At the time of writing, Southampton are only amazingly eight points off Ipswich Town in third spot, with a top-two push not out of the realms of possibility, either, with the Saints on 60 points, and Middlesbrough on 70.

It would be quite the story if Azaz and Co. were to give those chosen few clubs at the top of the division a run for their money.

Ultimately, even with their confidence sky-high, it does feel unlikely they'll be able to make such considerable strides.

But, in that mini league of teams between third and sixth, the Saints could gain a big psychological edge, ahead of any potential playoff battles to come, by pushing for more than just settling for that final position.
