Over the years, Southampton have had to become used to their positioning in the food chain.
Whenever they've had a top talent emerge from out their youth team, into the senior picture, it hasn't taken long for a higher suitor to swoop in and poach the up-and-coming talent, before he can truly blossom on home turf.
Indeed, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would sign for Arsenal at only 17 years of age, having experienced just one breakout season on the South Coast as a wide-eyed starlet in League One, while the likes of Gareth Bale would move away from their boyhood club at only 17, too, when Tottenham Hotspur came calling.
This is the nature of the beast, at the end of the day, with Southampton having to give up their homegrown assets, when a club of Arsenal's stature comes knocking.
In the here and now, the South Coast side could be resigned to losing George Kift, with the 14-year-old an exceptionally gifted player, considering he has already lined up for the U18s, despite still being a child.
Kift's outrageous rise at Southampton
Eckert and Co. have bucked this trend of youngsters instantly leaving St. Mary's behind when their name gains a bit of traction, with Cameron Bragg ready to stick it out at Southampton for the foreseeable, after making an encouraging 17 first team appearances in the Championship last season.
Kift would likely be better placed to stick it out as his boyhood employers, but the 14-year-old is already attracting a lot of attention, so it might be harder to keep him grounded.
He warrants all this recognition, too, with the midfielder just being handed the U13s-U16s player of the season, while Bragg won the U18s-U21s accolade.

It was a very formative season just gone for the youngster, with Kift - who can play as a central midfielder, or as a right winger - even bagging a goal for the U18s in April against West Bromwich Albion, despite only being 14.
His outrageous rise up the ranks hasn't gone unnoticed, with reports suggesting that the likes of Manchester City are keen on tempting Kift to the illustrious academy the Premier League side can boast.
Premier League onlookers are ready to pounce
Saints Xtra is reporting on all this frenzied interest for the homegrown midfielder, with Manchester United and Liverpool both also named as interested parties.
The Championship side will already feel that they have a losing battle on their hands to keep Kift around, with the allure of joining the Red Devils, or potentially one day lining up at Anfield, far too strong to turn down.
After all, the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Bale would go on to be Premier League staples, after walking away from Southampton at just 17.
All three of the Premier League sides will also be able to offer Kit more money, as the food chain dictates that the Saints must give up another of their prized youth stars. Hopefully, the 14-year-old midfielder sticks around, but don't hold your breath.
This is the harsh reality of the beautiful game, as the Saints will no doubt keep the conveyer belt of youngsters coming, who can be poached by a top-flight club in an instant.
