Southampton will have a serious promotion rival to contend with in West Ham United

West Ham United will be a serious promotion rival near the top of the Championship for Southampton to keep an eye on.

West Ham United will be the big hitters in the Championship next season.

The Hammers boast a 62,500 capacity home ground in the London Stadium, after all, and - at the moment - have a squad that should comfortably slot themselves back into the second tier and seal an instant Premier League return.

Indeed, Crysencio Summerville remains on the books at the moment, and was a trickster for Leeds United under Daniel Farke in the tough division during the 2023/24 season.

Amazingly, Jarrod Bowen has also decided he will be staying put with the Hammers next campaign as the main attacking force for Nuno Espirito Santo's men.

He's had many past meetings with Southampton, so Tonda Eckert and Co. will be fearful of Bowen turning on the style again against them once more, as he prepares to take the wider Championship by storm.

Bowen makes West Ham serious promotion contenders

It's crazy to think that Bowen will be lining up in the Championship next campaign, considering West Ham's relegation season just gone saw him collect nine goals and 11 assists in the top-flight.

He clearly wants to remain loyal to the Hammers, and he will also want to add to his three-goal career tally against Eckert's men when the two sides clash next season, as potential promotion rivals.

With 52 goals and 12 assists next to his name in the Championship already, when he was previously on the Hull City roster, the hope will be that the 29-year-old attacker is able to pick up from where he last let off in the taxing league.

If he can, he feels like a real cheat code for Espirito Santo to have on his side, with the East London giants storming home to the title, surely, if Bowen plays out of his skin all across the 46-game slog.

Southampton might have to make do with a spot just behind the Hammers in second, if they enter the division with considerable venom.

However, they could be dented in the transfer window by their new Championship adversaries shortly to hurt their promotion hopes, as it is being reported that West Ham is keen to land this Saints mainstay before the window is out.

Could the Hammers poach a Saints star?

Reports are suggesting that Taylor Harwood-Bellis remains on the West Ham shopping list this summer.

Scoring seven goals last campaign as one of Southampton's main stars at the back, this would be another shock development at the London Stadium that shows how seriously the Hammers are taking the second tier.

Eckert and Co obviously won't roll over and hand Harwood-Bellis over to them at the drop of a hat, but if West Ham can offer a contract that appeals to the one-time Manchester City defender, with their millions in the bank, he could link up with Bowen down the line to form a crazy squad for the league.

Of course, football isn't played on paper, so having a extravagant team doesn't always mean promotion is comfortably sealed, as you still have to grind out results.

But, it would be a silly opinion to hold if you don't think West Ham will be in and around the promotion positions with a player of Bowen's unbelievable quality at their disposal.

Still, Southampton will fancy their own chances of being a promotion contender, alongside the recently relegated titans, with the £9m addition of Lewis Dobbin sticking out in its own right.
