Southampton don't have the best track record when it comes to statement signings in attack.

Paul Onuachu sticks out as a noticeable howler in this department, and not just because he comes in at a towering 6-foot-7, as the lofty striker went on to only score an unconvincing four goals from 40 games on the South Coast, despite joining with the reputation of being a red-hot goalscorer from Genk for £18m.

Likewise, Manolo Gabbiadini's signing in 2017 will go down as a misfire, despite his EFL Cup final heroics against Manchester United, as he never quite lived up to his £15m billing long-term, leading to the Italian exiting off the back of a weak 12 goal tally across three seasons.

This isn't Southampton's only rodeo when it comes to disappointing Italian imports, however, with Dani Osvaldo sticking out as an even worse purchase than both Onuachu and the now 34-year-old.

Dani Osvaldo's up-and-down stint at Southampton

Osvaldo would join the Saints ranks as an eye-catching addition in the summer of 2013, costing around the £15m mark.

He would show off flashes of his immense quality, with 16 Serie A goals put away from 29 games for AS Roma the season before he made the big switch, with a stunning strike against Manchester City the pick of his slim Southampton back catalogue.

Curling a sumputous effort home, after leaving Vincent Kompany in his dust, the number 17 clearly had the skills to be a top-flight calibre talent in England, with Mauricio Pochettino labelling the effort as "amazing" at the time.

Osvaldo just never fit into the wider squad dynamic at St. Mary's, with a bust-up with Jose Fonte early into 2014 spelling the end of his topsy-turvy time with the South Coast giants.

Only scoring three goals from 13 games, it goes without saying that the £15m splashed out on the one-time Serie A champions was a waste of money, with a concern that this brand-new signing could be another Osvaldo in the making.

Saints will hope this signing isn't another Osvaldo blunder

Saints fans will be surprised by their team's interest in Ivan Azon.

Last campaign, in the Championship, the Spaniard would only find the back of the net an uninspiring four times for Ipswich Town, as they hunted down promotion.

The Tractor Boys did end up achieving their goal, but Azon wasn't exactly a key squad member. Rather, he was a figure Kieran McKenna utilised, but never depended on, with the likes of Jack Clarke and George Hirst demanding first team spaces week in week out, over the Como loanee.

Bizarrely, Southampton is still keen, and the worry will be that he goes down as another awkward Osvaldo blunder.

Rumoured to be in the race for Zaragoza-born striker for a fee around the £9m mark, it's a very risky move, as he might not be able to settle in well to his new surroundings, having been on the fringes rather unremarkably at Portman Road.

Yet, he has won promotion to the Premier League, so he has that going in his favour, with the proof in the pudding very shortly as to whether he's a rash waste of cash, or a striking deal gone right, if Azon ends up winning a move back to England or not.
